"An attack on one of our member states is an attack on the EU as a whole," Commission spokesman Thomas Regnier told a news conference in Brussels, as cited by the Ukrainska Pravda news outlet.

Regnier said the Commission treats the protection of member states and the EU as a whole as a priority, pointing to initiatives such as efforts to strengthen defences against drone threats, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

He did not specify how the EU would respond in the event of a Russian attack on one of its members.

Under Article 42.7 of the EU treaty, known as the mutual defence clause, member states are obliged to provide aid and assistance by all available means if another EU country becomes a victim of armed aggression.

The comments came after Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova warned the Baltic states over what she described as allowing Ukraine to use their airspace to carry out attacks on Russian territory, the PAP news agency reported, citing Ukrainska Pravda.

"These countries have been given an appropriate warning. If the regimes of these countries have any sense, they will heed it. If not, they will have to deal with a response," Zakharova said, according to Ukrainska Pravda.
