The call took place late on Sunday, Poland's Constitution Day, according to a statement posted on X.

During the conversation, Nawrocki thanked Trump "for his commitment and contribution" to securing the release of Polish-Belarusian journalist Andrzej Poczobut from a Belarusian prison, the statement said.

The two leaders also discussed "the current security situation," with a focus on the presence of US troops in Europe, Nawrocki's office said.

"Both presidents reaffirmed the strength and importance of the Polish-American alliance," it added.

The call followed an announcement by the Pentagon that it plans to withdraw about 5,000 US troops from Germany over the next six to 12 months.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Sunday that Poland had received no indication that troops withdrawn from Germany could be redeployed to NATO's eastern flank.

Deputy Defence Minister Paweł Zalewski said on Monday that Poland was in talks with the Pentagon about "increasing American capabilities in Poland."

Asked whether troops leaving Germany could be sent to Poland, he said: "We have to wait for the Pentagon's decision."
