Rzeczpospolita reported that the transfer was expected in the near future, citing Dariusz Łukowski, director of the Defence Ministry’s Department of Defence Strategy and Planning.
Zalewski said Ukrainian interest in MiG-29 aircraft had declined because Ukraine now considered F-16s, Mirage jets and other modern aircraft more desirable.
According to Rzeczpospolita, the service life of one of the two aircraft had already expired, while the other was still flying.
The Defence Ministry told the newspaper that Poland was preparing another aid package for Ukraine. It said the scale of support was limited by Poland’s national security and the resources of its armed forces, as determined by the chief of the General Staff.
The ministry said the package would include equipment being withdrawn from service or no longer used by the Polish armed forces but potentially useful to Ukraine. It did not disclose the package’s contents.
The newspaper also reported that Ukrainian defence officials said in September that Poland’s donation to Ukraine would be worth 50 million euros and would include air defence equipment.
