President Donald Trump sought to distance himself from the defeat on Truth Social, saying he “wasn’t on the Ballot” and that “if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!” In another post, he showed only a red cap bearing the word “VETO”, signalling he would block bills passed by the new Congress.
Democrats have secured 53 of the Senate’s 100 seats, based on projections from incomplete results, and may add more. They won in Republican strongholds including Texas, Kansas, Ohio, South Carolina and Iowa, as well as in North Carolina and Maine.
In Texas, state legislator James Talarico beat Attorney General Ken Paxton in the most expensive and closely watched race. In Maine, Troy Jackson ousted Republican Susan Collins after 30 years in office. In South Carolina, physician Annie Andrews won a state Trump carried by 18 percentage points in 2024.
Democrats held all their own seats, with Michigan the one still to be settled, and could end up with their biggest Senate gain since 2014.
In the House, NBC News projected Democrats will hold 255 seats, a gain of 41 and slightly better than pre-election polls had indicated. Many of their wins came in districts Trump carried by double digits two years ago.
The party also made gains in governors’ races. In Texas, Gina Hinojosa defeated incumbent Greg Abbott, and in Georgia, Keisha Lance Bottoms will become the state’s first Black woman governor. Democrats also flipped governorships in Ohio, Iowa and Kansas.
