Polish-owned refinery in Lithuania rebuilds railway connection to Latvia

A Polish-owned oil refinery in Mažeikiai, north-western Lithuania, on Saturday formally inaugurated a new railway connection to Latvia, in a bid to boost exports to that country.

Daniel Obajtek, head of Polish state-owned PKN Orlen, the operator of the refinery said that rebuilding the route, which was dismantled 10 years ago will allow the refinery to expand.

Obajtek also added that the refinery contributes to increasing Baltic countries energy security.

Lithuania's Transport Minister Jaroslav Narkevic said during the event in Mažeikiai that the rebuilt route is an important project for Polish - Lithuanian business ties.

Meanwhile, Latvia's Transport Minister Talis Linkaits added that rebuilding the connection was a key investment for Latvian transportation system.
