Poland goes 5G, opens digital innovation hub

A cutting-edge digital innovation hub opened in the central Polish city of Łódź on Thursday to boost research into 5G technology, a news agency reported.

The research facility, the first of its kind nationwide, was launched by officials and academics at the Łódź University of Technology, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Development Minister Jadwiga Emilewicz said at the launch that the DIH5G hub would operate as part of a Europe-wide network to test solutions for smart cities and intelligent buildings.

"5G means faster internet connections, faster data transfers, and more modern digital services,” she said, as quoted by the IAR news agency.

Emilewicz added that new digital technology was helping keep the economy going during the coronavirus pandemic.

The project has been carried out with help from the Polish government and business partners including Sweden’s Ericsson.

Poland’s first commercial 5G network takes off

Meanwhile, the operator of mobile phone network Plus has announced the launch of what it says is Poland’s first commercial 5G network.

The new 5G Plus network, launched on Monday, is ultimately expected to cover more than 3 million customers in seven Polish cities, Warsaw, Gdańsk, Katowice, Łódź, Poznań, Szczecin and Wrocław, according to the polsatnews.pl website.
