Poland to shut coal mines by 2049

The Polish government has reached a deal with trade unions that will see the gradual closure of hard coal mines in the country by 2049.

The plan, agreed on Friday, put an end to underground protests in mines belonging to the Polska Grupa Górnicza group, Poland’s top coal producer.

Artur Soboń, the head of a government delegation that had been negotiating with unionists amid the strike, said the deal would lead to “a just transformation of the Polish mining and energy sector.”
