Taking part in the international Cybersec conference, Marek Zagórski said: “In cooperation with other member states, Poland will be calling on the European Commission to implement measures which counteract disinformation regarding telecommunications networks, and 5G in particular.”
The three-day cybersecurity conference is being organised by the Kościuszko Institute, a Polish think-tank. It started on Monday, with the event held entirely online amid the coronavirus pandemic.
5G (fifth generation) is a new telecommunications standard that will enable wireless transmission speeds 50 or even 100 times faster than the current 4G network.
The new technology is expected to accelerate the development of the Internet of Things, telemedicine, autonomous vehicles and smart cities, among a wide range of other applications.
5G technology is the subject of many rumours, with some even claiming it causes the spread of the coronavirus. Experts have criticised such allegations as groundless conspiracy theories.
The Cybersec conference is being attended by Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid, European Commission Vice-President Margrethe Vestager, and Google vice-president Vinton Cerf, who has been called one of "the fathers of the internet".
