PKN Orlen CEO Daniel Obajtek said the acquisition, from German owner Verlagsgruppe Passau Capital Group, was in line with the oil refiner’s strategic plans to strengthen retail sales, including non-fuel sales.

Polska Press owns 20 out of 24 regional dailies published in Poland and nearly 120 local weeklies, public broadcaster Polish Radio's IAR news agency reported. It also owns 500 internet portals.

Last year, Polska Press generated revenues of over PLN 398.4 million (USD 108m, EUR 89m), according to the IAR agency.

PKN Orlen recently took control of troubled press distributor Ruch.
