Employment down, wages up in Polish firms y/y in December: stats office

Employment in Polish companies dropped by 1 percent in December on average in year-on-year terms, the country’s Central Statistical Office (GUS) said on Thursday.

Meanwhile, average wages in Poland's corporate sector in December increased by 6.6 percent compared with the same month a year earlier, the state-run statistics agency reported.

The average gross Polish monthly wage last month was PLN 5,973.75 (EUR 1,318, USD 1,599), according to the statistical office.

The figures are for companies with more than nine employees.

The Polish Prime Minister's Office has said that some 6 million jobs have been saved around the country thanks to measures including a massive relief and stimulus package designed to shield the economy from the coronavirus.

Poland’s labour ministry has estimated that the country's unemployment rate was 6.2 percent in December, up from 6.1 percent in the previous six months.
