A factory owned by South Korean electric giant LG located near the western Polish city of Wrocław is next year set to become the world’s largest electric car battery factory, with an annual production capacity of 100 GWh, state news PAP reported, citing a report by Brussels-based NGO Transport & Environment.
Demand for lithium-ion batteries in Europe will increase rapidly in the coming years, the report said, estimating that in 2025 it will amount to around 300 GWh, rising to 700 GWh in 2030, and in 2035 to over 1,300 GWh.
Last month, Swedish battery producer Northvolt announced it would invest USD 200 million in a planned battery plant in Poland’s northern city of Gdańsk.
