The Pengab index, which measures banking sentiment in the country, went up by 2.5 points to 11.4 in May, the Polish Bank Association (ZBP) and market researcher Kantar TNS have said in a joint report.

The rise in the index reflected a further increase in customer activity on the Polish market for banking services amid a sustained drop in new COVID-19 infections, according to the report.

Krzysztof Pietraszkiewicz, the head of the Polish Bank Association, was quoted as saying that May marked another month in which banking sentiment steadily bounced back from a slide during the worst of the lockdown.

However, despite its consistent rise in recent months, the Pengab index remains markedly lower than it was before the pandemic, Pietraszkiewicz added.

The study was carried out from May 7 to 21, surveying 100 bank outlets nationwide, state news agency PAP reported.

In April last year, banking sentiment in Poland tumbled to its lowest level on record during the coronavirus pandemic.
