US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement that "the Department of State had submitted a report to Congress (…) in line with the United States’ continuing opposition to the Nord Stream 2 pipeline."

The two Russians identified in the report will be sanctioned under the Protecting Europe’s Energy Security Act of 2019 (PEESA), the statement reads.

Blinken noted, however, that the US administration would "continue to work with Germany and other allies and partners to reduce the risks posed by the pipeline to Ukraine and frontline NATO and EU countries."

Warsaw has strongly criticised the gas link project amid concerns that the pipeline will make the European Union more dependent on Russian gas.

Despite the opposition by Poland and the US, the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline is nearing completion, according to a report by Reuters.
