23.03.2022 10:00
The European Commission is expected to unveil a package of support for people fleeing war-torn Ukraine, and for the countries on the frontlines of the refugee crisis, such as Poland, a Polish newspaper reported on Wednesday.

Officials in Brussels are planning to set up a one-stop-shop for outlays on refugee support, the Rzeczpospolita daily reported.

Countries will be asked to provide bills for the money spent on helping refugees, for instance with accommodation, according to the newspaper.

“European Commission officials will then decide which European Union funds to use to refinance these costs,” Rzeczpospolita said.

EU to reimburse all expenses on refugee support

It added that “Brussels is promising to repay all expenses incurred by member states on refugee support.”

In addition, “the European Commission wants to appoint a liaison officer with a Ukrainian digital-education platform, where EU-based teachers would be able to support the education of young Ukrainians,” Rzeczpospolita reported.

Another area of support is healthcare, according to the paper. To begin with, the European Commission is planning to make 2,000 hospital beds available to refugees in countries such as Poland, Rzeczpospolita reported.

Around 3.5 million Ukrainians, half of them children, have already fled to the EU following the Russian invasion of their country, the paper said.

Wednesday is day 28 of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Poland on Wednesday reported it had welcomed nearly 2.18 million refugees fleeing Russia's attack on Ukraine.

Earlier this month, Poland’s President Andrzej Duda signed into law a wide-ranging package of support for Ukrainians escaping the Russian invasion of their country.

The measure grants them legal stay in Poland and ensures access to education, healthcare and social  benefits.
