“The new PLN 2 billion facilities will increase the profitability of the oil refining process at our Gdańsk refinery, strengthen the security of product supply and allow us to export our products worldwide,” PKN Orlen’s CEO Daniel Obajtek told the media.

EUR 100 million transshipment terminal

The new transshipment terminal is expected to cost more than PLN 500 million (EUR 100 million) and be ready by 2025, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

The facility in the northern Polish port is intended for uses such as the transshipment of biofuel components from vessels up to 130 metres in length, according to officials.

The terminal’s initial transshipping capacity will exceed 1 million tonnes of products per year, PKN Orlen said, adding that this may eventually rise to 2 million tonnes.

EUR 300 million hydrocracking plant

In addition, the company is building a hydrocracking plant in Gdańsk that will be linked to the new transshipment terminal, reporters were told.

Worth over PLN 1.4 billion (EUR 300 million), this facility will produce “the most modern, Group II base oils” and is expected “to notably enhance PKN Orlen’s competitiveness,” officials said.

The plant is designed to churn out over 400,000 tonnes of products per year, the PAP news agency reported.

Independence, logistics savings, local development

PKN Orlen’s Obajtek told the media: “By investing in our own infrastructure, we are boosting our independence from external partners, thus generating substantial logistics savings.”

Obajtek added: “Importantly, we are harnessing the potential of local companies, who will be our subcontractors in this project.”
