The operation saw investigators confiscate 12 tonnes of illegal tobbaco and more than 10 million cigarettes, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported on Tuesday.

A total of nine suspects, including a Paraguayan national and a Portuguese man, have been detained, law enforcers said.

Prosecutors have charged the suspects with being part of an organised criminal group and also accused them of illegal manufacture of cigarettes and tax offences, reporters were told.

The crackdown—by officers from Poland's Central Bureau of Police Investigation (CBŚP), working together with investigators from the country’s customs and tax administration and helped by Europe's Europol police agency—saved public coffers some PLN 26 million (EUR 5.8 million, USD 6.3 million) in losses from uncollected excise tax, officials said.
