EU to impose counter-tariffs on U.S. goods in response to metals duties

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Tuesday announced retaliatory measures against the United States over tariffs on European steel and aluminum, calling them “bad for business, and even worse for consumers.”

“We deeply regret the U.S. tariffs imposed on Europe,” von der Leyen said in a statement, pledging “strong but proportionate countermeasures.”

Noting that Washington has levied duties worth $28 billion, she said the EU will respond with $26 billion in tariffs on American imports.

Brussels plans to reinstate tariffs suspended under former President Joe Biden beginning April 1, then broaden them on April 13. Affected U.S. goods include peanut butter, bourbon, jeans, motorcycles, and boats.
