European planemaker Airbus is close to finalizing a deal to sell approximately 40 passenger jets to the Polish carrier LOT, following a competitive and politically charged contest with Brazilian manufacturer Embraer, according to industry sources cited by the Reuters News Agency.

Unless there is a last-minute change, the agreement for the Airbus regional jets could be announced as early as the opening day of the Paris Airshow on Monday. The sources spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the discussions.

An Airbus spokesperson stated, "We do not comment on rumors," while representatives from LOT and Embraer also declined to provide comments.

On Saturday, the Polish Press Agency (PAP) reported that Polish Infrastructure Minister Dariusz Klimczak planned to attend the airshow. He mentioned, "We will announce on Monday afternoon, along with the president of LOT, the results of the long-awaited tender procedure for the purchase of the fleet for LOT."

Poland has been seeking a total of 80 or more regional jets, approximately half of which would be purchase options, to expand and develop its Central Communication Port by the early 2030s, while also growing its central Warsaw Chopin airport hub.

The purchase of the planes would help fuel that expansion, LOT Chief Executive Michal Fijol has told Polish media.
