According to the newspaper Dziennik Bałtycki, during the Tuesday celebrations of the 105th anniversary of Polish maritime education, it was officially announced that a decision had been made to build a new sailing ship to replace the current Dar Młodzieży.

“At the Ministry of Infrastructure, we fully understand that investing in education and science is the best form of investment. That is why we have decided to build a new training sailing ship for the Maritime University,” emphasized Deputy Minister Arkadiusz Marchewka during the ceremony, also noting that many formal matters still need to be resolved by both the ministry and the university.

The anniversary celebrations took place on the university campus in Gdynia and referred back to the events of June 17, 1920, when the Maritime School was established in Tczew - the foundation of today’s Maritime University in Gdynia, which will receive the new sailing ship valued at around 300 million PLN (€70,174,500).

An additional 20 mln PLN (€4,678,800) will be allocated for the renovation of training and research vessels as well as lecure halls.

Built in 1982 at the Gdańsk Shipyard, the training sailing ship Dar Młodzieży is one of the most important symbols of Poland’s maritime tradition.

For over four decades, it has served as Poland’s ambassador on the world’s seas and oceans, regularly participating in prestigious regattas and tall ship gatherings, including The Tall Ships Races, thus promoting Polish maritime heritage.

Dar Młodzieży ponownie zawita do Gdyni 18 maja. Prod: Jakub Strzelczyk #Gdynia #UMG #UniwersytetMorski
