Sales of furniture, household appliances and consumer electronics shot up by 18.9 percent, and those of motor vehicles rose 15.7 percent, the state-run Statistics Poland (GUS) agency said on Tuesday.
Sales of pharmaceuticals and cosmetics grew 6 percent, while those of clothing and shoes rose 4.7 percent, according to Statistics Poland.
In terms of current prices, retail sales last month were 4.3 percent higher than in May 2024, Statistics Poland said.
In month-on-month terms, retail sales in May were 3.2 percent lower than in April, the statistics office also reported.
Finance minister hails 'growing consumer confidence'
Finance Minister Andrzej Domański welcomed the latest figures, saying that domestic retail sales were in part driven by rising consumer optimism.
"Growing consumer confidence translates into dynamic growth in durable goods sales," he wrote on X.
