EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen said on Monday it is time to turn off the tap on Russian gas. He added that Europe has allowed Putin to use energy as a weapon for far too long and that the EU has been overly dependent on gas from an aggressor conducting an illegal war in Ukraine.

Member states will now begin negotiations with the European Parliament over the final shape of the regulation.

Historic EU decision to end Russian gas imports, says Polish minister of energy

Miłosz Motyka, Poland’s Energy Minister, said at the Luxembourg meeting that he had discussed with Commissioner Jorgensen the EU’s need to fully end its dependence on Russian energy and achieve a fair transition to cleaner sources.

The ministers also emphasized the importance of investments in energy grids under the TEN-E and Connecting Europe Facility programs, which will help secure stable energy supplies.

Motyka called the agreement “a historic EU decision,” noting that the Energy Council has adopted legislation introducing a full ban on Russian gas imports from 1 January 2028.

The politician described it as a major blow to Russia’s energy sector and a significant success for Poland, stressing that Europe must prioritize security and independence and avoid financing Putin’s war machine.
