The proposal stipulates that Russian gas imports must expire by January 1, 2028, which applies to both liquefied natural gas (LNG) and gas delivered via pipelines.
The agreement, reached at a meeting in Luxembourg on Monday, was hailed by Warsaw as “a historic decision and major success for Poland.”
“For years, we have been calling for a complete end to energy imports from Russia,” said Polish Energy Minister Miłosz Motyka.
“Time and again, Russia has shown how it uses them—as tools of energy terror—directly influencing political decisions even within the European Union,” he added.
Poland was among 10 EU member states that earlier this year signed a joint letter demanding a complete ban on Russian gas across the bloc.
