Poland experienced a sharp rise in cyberattacks on government institutions in the first week of January, with an average of about 3,200 attempted attacks per institution, the daily newspaper Rzeczpospolita reported on Wednesday.

The paper cited a report by cybersecurity firm Check Point, which said Poland faces more cyberattack attempts than any other country in Europe.

Energy facilities were also targeted by an unprecedented wave of cyber incidents, according to the report.

Poland’s exposure is due to its geopolitical position and its support for Ukraine in its defence against Russia’s invasion, Rzeczpospolita said.

Officials warned that public institutions must prepare for increasingly coordinated and sophisticated attacks.

"Cyberattacks are part of a strategy to destabilise a country and undermine its resilience," said Wojciech Głażewski, director at Check Point Software Technologies.

However, experts cautioned that technological defences alone may not be sufficient.

"Humans remain the weakest link," said Kamil Wiśniewski of the Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technology in Warsaw.

"Most effective attacks require at least minimal user action—clicking a link, opening a file or providing data," he added.

The Polish police force’s Central Cybercrime Bureau said on Monday that cyberattacks in Poland rose by about 30 percent in 2025 compared with the previous year, with many of the incidents traced to actors operating from China, Russia and North Korea.
