Poland among EU countries with shortest working lives: report

People entering the labour market in Poland can expect to spend an average of 36 years in employment, giving the country one of the shortest working lives in the European Union, according to a report by a Warsaw-based think tank.

The Polish Economic Institute (PIE) think tank said a person turning 15 in Poland in 2025 could expect to remain economically active for 36 years, compared with the EU average of 37.5 years.

That placed Poland seventh from the bottom among the bloc's member states.

Only Romania, Italy, Bulgaria, Greece, Croatia, Belgium and Luxembourg recorded shorter expected working lives.

Germany, the Netherlands and the Nordic countries topped the ranking, with expected working lives exceeding 40 years.

The report noted, however, that Poland's average working life has increased by 3.3 years over the past decade. That outpaced the EU average increase of 2.7 years.

Hungary recorded the largest gain, with expected working lives rising by nearly five years, while the Netherlands saw an increase of four years, according to the European Union's Eurostat statistics agency.

The Polish Economic Institute said longer healthy life expectancy could help extend working lives in Poland.
