Zelensky: Trump’s Russian diesel deal a ‘gift for Putin’

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has criticised US President Donald Trump’s decision to let Russian diesel flow to world markets, calling it a gift to Vladimir Putin that will help fund the war.

Zelensky said the move would hand Moscow billions of dollars more to fight Ukraine and would let Putin step up attacks. He noted that Washington was allowing Russian fuel exports just as peace talks were under way.

Trump announced the arrangement on his Truth Social platform after what he called a “highly successful” call with Putin. He said Russia would immediately supply more than 300,000 tonnes of diesel, followed by another 500,000 tonnes in November and 1 million tonnes "immediately thereafter."

A further 3 million tonnes could follow, Trump said, depending on the technical condition of Russian refineries. That would bring the total to 4.8 million tonnes.

A Ukrainian delegation is due to meet US officials in Florida this weekend. Zelensky said his team was being used as a smokescreen, which he called unfair.

“This is not how partners should treat each other,” he said. “It looks like a weak decision by strong partners.”

The US Energy Information Administration says American transport consumed about 2.94 million barrels of diesel a day in 2025, or roughly 400,000 tonnes.
