Westinghouse has placed preliminary orders with four Polish suppliers to manufacture modules for the first reactor of the planned Lubiatowo-Kopalino nuclear power plant.
The orders went to Energomontaż-Północ Gdynia, Famak, Mostostal Kielce and Mostostal Kraków.
All four companies are participating in Westinghouse’s supplier programme and working to meet the US nuclear quality assurance standard NQA-1.
Once they complete the qualification process and produce trial module components, known as mock-ups, Westinghouse will commission the full scope of work planned for the project.
Westinghouse executive Dan Lipman said the company was impressed by the technical capabilities of Polish industry. He said the cooperation, developed with project investor PEJ, involved manufacturing and supplying modules important for nuclear safety for Poland’s first AP1000 reactor.
PEJ President Marek Woszczyk said the preliminary orders showed that Polish companies were moving closer to taking part in the construction of Poland’s first nuclear power plant.
Last week, PEJ said it had instructed Westinghouse to begin ordering long-lead-time components for the first reactor. The order covers six key components of the nuclear island, including the reactor containment structure and associated structural modules.
The first nuclear power plant is being built in the municipality of Choczewo, northern Poland. PEJ is the investor, while US companies Westinghouse and Bechtel are the contractors.
The first AP1000 reactor is scheduled to begin operation in 2036, with the next two planned for 2037 and 2038.
The Energy Ministry, PEJ and PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna signed an agreement on Tuesday setting out their responsibilities and cooperation in preparing a second nuclear power plant.
Energy Minister Miłosz Motyka said the government was working on a second plant alongside the first, with the aim of strengthening energy security and reducing dependence on external suppliers.
Under the planned schedule, a strategic partner and technology are expected to be selected next year, with construction due to begin around 2032.
The first reactor at the second plant is expected to begin operation around 2040.
