Under the bill, the head of state stands to receive a 40-percent salary increase, while local councillors will benefit from a 60-percent hike.

The bill, which passed the house on Wednesday, won the support of 267 MPs, mainly those from the ruling conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party and two smaller groupings, Poland's PAP news agency reported.

Meanwhile, 166 lawmakers from opposition caucuses voted against the bill, and 20 others abstained.

The new measure approved by Polish MPs also regulates social insurance for the presidential spouse and the pay of state electoral officials.

Meanwhile, at the end of last month, a decree by President Andrzej Duda was published in the Polish Journal of Laws to grant pay rises to the prime minister, speakers of both houses of parliament and other top officials, including deputy ministers.

Lawmakers will also see their salaries expand, as they must earn 80 percent of a deputy minister's base salary, the PAP news agency reported.
