The operation saw investigators confiscate 6.5 million counterfeit cigarettes, with a street value of around PLN 5 million (EUR 1 million, USD 1.1 million), public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported on Tuesday.

Seven suspects, three Poles and four Moldovans, have been detained, law enforcers said.

Prosecutors have charged the suspects with being part of an organised criminal group and also accused them of illegal manufacture of cigarettes and tax offences, reporters were told.

The crackdown—by officers from Poland's Central Bureau of Police Investigation (CBŚP), working together with investigators from the country’s customs and tax administration—saved public coffers some PLN 7.6 million (EUR 1.6 million, USD 1.7 million) in losses from uncollected excise tax, officials said.
