The project was approved by the company’s supervisory board on Thursday, Orlen said in a statement.
The new offshore wind farm will be developed by Baltic Power, a joint venture between Orlen (which has a 51 percent stake) and the Amsterdam-based NP Baltic Wind B.V., from the Northland Power Inc. capital group, the Parkiet website reported.
Construction work is set to start this year, with the launch planned for 2026, according to officials.
Worth an estimated EUR 4.73 billion, Orlen’s offshore wind farm will have a capacity of 1.2 GW, Parkiet reported.
Orlen Group’s CEO Daniel Obajtek said in a statement: “Energy transition means clean, universally accessible energy and a modern, competitive economy. Orlen Group will radically expand its renewable energy operations by 2030, reaching 9 GW of installed capacity.”
Orlen' CEO said that offshore wind energy would be “a key part” of this strategy, Parkiet reported.
On July 3, fellow Polish state-run energy giant PGE Group and Danish power company Ørsted signed contracts with suppliers of foundations and internal cables for Baltica, their planned 2.5 GW wind farm in the Baltic Sea, billed as “the biggest offshore wind farm project in Europe.”
