Poland this year implemented the European Union's Omnibus directive to strengthen consumer rights, state news agency PAP reported.

Under the new regulations, apart from giving the current price of a product or service, retailers have to indicate the lowest price it has had over the past 30 days, the Polish Ministry of Development and Technology said.

"This will allow consumers to assess whether they are dealing with a real discount," said Development and Technology Minister Waldemar Buda.

Moreover, stores offering sales and deals must announce them "in a clear way" and give shoppers an opportunity to compare prices, according to officials.

The reduced price should be indicated by a different colour or using such terms as "price promotion," "price reduction" or "discount," the ministry added.

The new regulations are designed to curb practices such as temporary price hikes, when product prices are raised artificially to make the discounts appear larger, according to officials.

The Ministry of Development and Technology also urged Christmas shoppers to be mindful of their new rights, the PAP news agency reported.
