Poland was among several EU nations affected by the Biden administration’s previous export controls, but these curbs will now be reversed just days before they were set to expand globally.
Polish Radio's Washington correspondent Marek Wałkuski dismissed claims by some Polish politicians that this decision resulted from recent talks between Karol Nawrocki and Donald Trump.
“The US decision to lift chip export controls has nothing to do with Nawrocki’s meeting with Trump. Reuters had already reported in April that Trump sees chip policy as a bargaining chip in trade negotiations,” Wałkuski wrote on social media.
Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Affairs, Krzysztof Gawkowski, welcomed the move, emphasizing that “representatives of the Polish government have been actively advocating for this change in recent months” and that the US administration’s readiness to listen to allies is a positive sign.
Charge d’affaires at the Polish embassy in Washington, Bogdan Klich, also commented, thanking for rescinding the 'AI Diffusion Rule.'
"Poland is a trusted ally of the United States, and we look forward to deepening our partnership to harness the power of AI innovation – together, making our nations and the transatlantic alliance stronger," he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
US officials explained that the restrictions would have hampered American innovation, strained diplomatic ties, and relegated allied countries to “second-class status.”
The revised policy aims to share AI technology with trusted partners while maintaining strict controls to prevent access by geopolitical rivals, particularly China.
