Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk on Monday announced a EUR 1 billion plan to enlarge the Sławków Euroterminal, the European Union’s only broad-gauge rail gateway for freight arriving from Ukraine and Asia.

“This is a gigantic opportunity opening before Poland … a golden deal for us,” Tusk told reporters after overseeing an investment agreement between the state-owned Industrial Development Agency (ARP) and the terminal operator.

“We want to earn big money on rebuilding Ukraine, and nobody should be shy about saying so," he added.

The capacity of the terminal is expected to rise more than 75 percent to over 500,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) a year, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

ARP head Wojciech Balczun called logistics “the key to business,” describing the Sławków terminal as "Europe’s largest dry port."

Infrastructure Minister Dariusz Klimczak said boosting the terminal’s capacity secures Poland “a central role in handling cargo across Europe.”

Tusk told reporters that the hub must remain under Polish control despite foreign interest.

Work is due to be finished in stages over the next few years, officials said, positioning Sławków to capture westbound cargo flows and to bypass vulnerable eastern routes as the war in Ukraine reshapes supply chains.
