Polish arms maker Mesko said on Tuesday it signed a roughly SEK 3 billion (EUR 270 million) contract to supply Piorun man-portable air-defense systems to Sweden, with deliveries planned for 2027.
Developed in Poland and continually upgraded with user input, Piorun has been proven in combat, including in Ukraine, Mesko said. The system is described as precise, resistant to jamming, and capable of engaging helicopters, drones and cruise missiles.

The agreement was signed at the DSEI defense fair in London between Mesko—part of Polish Armaments Group (PGZ)—and Sweden’s defense procurement agency, the company said.

Interest from Stockholm was first expressed in March 2025, followed by a preliminary order in June, according to Mesko. The systems will bolster Sweden’s very-short-range air defense as part of a broader military modernization. Sweden joined NATO in 2024.

“Piorun is an example of a product that combines innovation, reliability and experience from the real battlefield,” Mesko CEO Renata Gruszczyńska said, adding the deal reflects the work of engineering teams and government support for the defense sector.

Deputy prime minister and defense minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said Poland is becoming an arms exporter, calling Piorun “our number one product.”

He noted Sweden’s purchase is worth about PLN 1.2 billion and referenced recent sales to Belgium, adding that Poland’s defense industry “will soon be the engine” of the economy.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk also hailed the sale on X, describing Piorun as one of the flagship products of Poland’s defense industry and posting, “Pride.”

Mesko called the contract further evidence of its and PGZ’s rising position in Europe’s defense market and part of efforts to strengthen Poland’s defense industry and its role in allies’ security.
