A consortium of France's Airbus Defence and Space, Thales Alenia Space and Polish defense electronics maker Radmor has signed a contract to build a geostationary telecommunications satellite for Poland's military, the companies said on Wednesday.

The agreement was signed during a visit to Gdańsk by French President Emmanuel Macron, who met with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk to mark Polish-French Friendship Day.

French Defense Minister Catherine Vautrin and her Polish counterpart, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, attended the signing ceremony.

The new satellite will provide secure communications for Polish armed forces under the European Commission's "Readiness 2030" plan, launched in 2025.

Airbus said the system would be "cyber-secured in both the ground and space segments and resilient against threats, thereby contributing to the strengthening of Poland's sovereignty in space."

The industrial cooperation agreement combines the partners' expertise in military communications, mission control, satellite platform design and ground infrastructure cybersecurity.

Thales Alenia Space is a joint venture of France's Thales and Italy's Leonardo.

Radmor, a unit of WB Group — Poland's largest privately held defense company — specializes in military radio stations and communications systems. Its chief executive, Bartłomiej Zając, said the move into the space sector was "a natural stage" in the company's development, broadening both its frequency range and communications portfolio.

Airbus was previously awarded a contract in 2022 to supply Poland's military with the Pleiades Neo satellite constellation.
