“We can confirm that the body found is Dawid’s,” Łukasz Łapczyński, a spokesman for the Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Warsaw, said on Monday.

The search, which officials said was Poland's biggest ever, was launched earlier this month after the boy, Dawid Żukowski, was reported missing by his family. His father was reported missing at the same time.

The father later took his own life by throwing himself under a train, state news agency PAP has cited police as saying.

The body of a child was found on Saturday by a road between Warsaw and Grodzisk Mazowiecki, south-west of the capital.

The PAP news agency on Monday quoted Polish police spokesman Mariusz Ciarka as saying that the body “was hidden in tall grass; one can tell that the person who had left it there had done everything to make it harder for [the body] to be found.”
