Emma Morosini arrived at the Pauline monastery in the city on Wednesday afternoon, after walking from the northern Italian town of Castiglione della Stiviere on Lake Garda.

She prayed in front of the monastery’s revered Black Madonna Icon, and was greeted by the prior, who thanked her and presented her with a rosary.

Morosini said she was happy to be in Częstochowa. “Since I turned 70, I spend three months every year visiting religious shrines,” she added.

Last year she covered more than 900 kilometres in 40 days on her way to the Guadalupe sanctuary in Mexico. She had earlier been to Jerusalem, Fatima in Portugal, Lourdes in France and Aparecida in Brazil.

She said she was offered help and accommodation by many people along the way to Poland.

The city’s Jasna Góra monastery, with its famous Black Madonna icon, has a history going back to the end of the 14th century.

It is one of the world’s most popular destinations for religious pilgrimages, attracting some 4 million people from around the globe every year.
