The bodies were transported by helicopter to a hospital in Zakopane, southern Poland, on Thursday and were to be examined to determine the cause of death.

The two cavers were part of a group of six people who entered the Wielka Śnieżna Cave on August 15. Spanning almost 24 km, this is the longest cave in Poland’s southern Tatra Mountains.

On August 17, four people emerged and immediately notified authorities that two of their colleagues had been trapped by an unexpected flood inside the cave.

The rescue mission turned into a recovery operation after first body was found on August 22. A week later, the remains of the second spelunker were found.

Dozens of rescuers had been working in often extreme conditions to reach the bodies. Many tunnels were too small for rescuers to pass through and they had to detonate explosives to widen access.
