A total of 1,492 cases were reported in 2019, according to the National Institute of Public Health.

That compares to 359 cases reported in 2018, according to state news agency PAP.

Measles is highly contagious and can spread through coughing or sneezing.

Symptoms include fever, a cough, a blocked nose and a rash. Possible complications include meningitis.

One of the most effective ways of preventing the disease is a measles vaccine.

The World Health Organisation believes that a resurgence of measles worldwide is caused by the growth of an “anti-vax” movement and the spread of false information about vaccinations being dangerous.
