President hopes new coronavirus cases in Poland will start to fall by Easter

President Andrzej Duda has said he hopes that with "good discipline" the daily total of new coronavirus cases in Poland will start to fall by Easter.

But he added it may not prove possible to fight off the Covid-19 disease by that time.

Duda was speaking during a live webcast on Monday during which he answered questions from citizens about the coronavirus outbreak.

He said that for now it was impossible to fully assess the overall impact of the pandemic. He added that the only certainty was that the virus would cause an international economic crisis and that this would also hit Poland.

Duda added that the Polish authorities were trying to acquire as much medical equipment needed by hospitals as possible, but said this was difficult due to demand at home and abroad.

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Poland rose by 116 on Monday, bringing the total to 749, while the death toll rose to eight.

On Tuesday morning, officials reported 17 new coronavirus infections in the country.

Poland has declared a “state of epidemic" and temporarily closed its borders to non-residents in a move to curb the spread of the illness.
