The non-indigenous species sighted and photographed at the Wigry National Park in northeastern Poland turned out to be a yellow-bellied slider native to North America, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
It said the predator was still on the loose, posing a threat to local reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates.
The yellow-bellied slider (Trachemys scripta scripta) is one of the most dangerous invasive turtle species competing with native wildlife in various parts of the world, according to officials at the Polish national park.
