Most of the waste –  nearly 3 million tonnes – is food thrown away by family households, said Dr. Beata Bilska of the Warsaw University of Life Sciences.

She added that every household in Poland wastes an average of 3.9 kg per week.

About 15 percent of food goes to waste during the agricultural production phase and another 15 percent during processing, public broadcaster Polish Radio's IAR news agency reported.

The study was carried out by the Institute of Environmental Protection-National Research Institute and the Warsaw University of Life Sciences.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, 1.3 billion tonnes of edible food is wasted around the world every year, accounting for a third of global food production.
