Biometric ID cards for Poles from August

The Polish parliament has passed a law on new biometric ID cards, in compliance with EU regulations demanding fingerprints on such documents.

From August 2, fingerprinting will become compulsory; such prints will be stored on a microchip on ID cards.

Another change introduced on new IDs is the signature of the owner and the image of two flags - one of the EU and the other of the bearer's country of origin.

However, under regulations adopted by the Polish lower house, anyone who has a valid ID card in the current form can use it until it expires.
