Aleksander Miedwiediew, who made the find, said: "This is a phenomenal set of weapons in the form of a sword, scabbard, belt and two knives. Considering that these items … were in the ground for about 600 years, they are preserved in an exceptionally good condition."

Miedwiediew found the weapons near the northern city of Olsztyn and handed them over to the regional authorities, who in turn passed them on to the Battle of Grunwald Museum.

They will now be studied and undergo conservation work.

Fought on July 15, 1410, the Battle of Grunwald saw Polish King Władysław Jagiełło and his army of allied forces defeat the war machine of the Teutonic Knights, which had previously been regarded as invincible.

The battle is considered to be one of the most glorious and significant military victories in Polish history.
