The new, highly contagious variant was confirmed by health authorities in "a 3-year-old girl living in Warsaw," the Polish health ministry said in a tweet, adding that the child tested positive on December 14.

A day earlier, Poland reported its first case of omicron in a 30-year-old woman from the southern African country of Lesotho.

The woman attended the United Nations' 2021 Internet Governance Forum in the southern Polish city of Katowice earlier this month.

Poland on Friday reported 20,027 new coronavirus infections and 566 more deaths related to COVID-19, bringing the country's total number of cases during the pandemic to 3,923,472 and fatalities to 90,872.

A range of new coronavirus restrictions took effect across the country this week as it seeks to fend off the new, highly transmissible omicron variant.

The first Polish citizen diagnosed with omicron was a teenager who tested positive earlier this week during a trip to China, according to a spokesman for the Polish health ministry.
