The head of Poland’s state-run Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) on Monday said that a large majority of Polish pensioners would see their pensions increase as a result of the government’s package of socio-economic policies, the Polish New Deal.

Gertruda Uścińska told the Rzeczpospolita newspaper that contrary to many “opinions and comments appearing in the press and social media,” the government has “good news for pensioners and disability pensioners,” the state PAP news agency reported.

“Under the tax changes which took effect on January 1,” the official said, “ZUS payouts are set to change.”

“As of January, for 94 percent of pensioners and over 98 percent of disability pensioners, who have been receiving up to PLN  4,920 (EUR 1,085) gross a month from us [ZUS], the pension payment is bigger,” Uścińska said.

She added that those who have been receiving around PLN 2,500 (EUR 551) gross a month stood to gain the most from the new rules.

“For the small group who have been getting up to PLN 483 (EUR 107) gross a month, the changes have no effect, the ZUS chairman said, while “those receiving over PLN  4,920 (EUR 1,085) gross a month, were initially set to have their payouts decreased, compared with December 2021.”

However, the government has already announced it will change the rules for those earning between PLN  4,920 (EUR 1,085) and PLN 12,800 (EUR 2,822) gross a month.

“They represent just 6 percent of ZUS’s pensioners and less than 2 percent of disability pensioners,” Uścińska noted.

“The cabinet is to enact a policy which will make the Polish New Deal neutral in terms of how much these pensioners receive,” the ZUS chairman said, as cited by PAP.
