Marlena Maląg told reporters that the temporary benefit would be available for those eligible until February 27.

She said it was being reintroduced because schools, with the exception of younger elementary-school children, recently switched to remote classes amid a new wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The additional care allowance will be available if the child’s school closes or functions in a limited capacity due to COVID-19,” Maląg explained.

“When we decided to reintroduce remote classes, we also decided to offer an additional care allowance again so that parents are able to provide care when their children learn from home,” she said.

The additional allowance is available to those who care for a child aged eight or less, a disabled person aged 18 or less, or a person with special educational needs aged 24 or less, and there is no second parent who can provide care, the PAP news agency reported.
