Four people died and eleven were injured in 557 fires across Poland, during the Easter holidays, Polish firefighters’ spokesman Karol Kierzkowski told the state PAP news agency on Monday.

According to Kierzkowski, the main cause of fires is carelessness during meal preparations, as well as alcohol consumption.

“People leave their meals cooking, or candles burning unattended. A lot of times, they are under the influence of alcohol, falling asleep on a sofa or an armchair with a cigarette,” Kierzkowski said.

He also called on Poles to be more careful while cooking, and to equip their houses with basic rechargeable fire extinguishers.
