Agata Kornhauser-Duda met with her guests in the presidential palace, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

The Karakevic family had been forced to flee the Russian troops and found refuge in the southeastern Polish town of Kolbuszowa, officials said.

The guests described their experiences with war and how they were reluctant to leave their home despite the Russian invasion.

“When bombs began to fall near our house, we had to protect the children,” the parents said.

‘The free world has the face of Ukraine’

The Karakevic family thanked Polish people for the help extended to their country amid the war. They quoted the words of Polish President Andrzej Duda, who said on a recent visit to Kyiv that “the free world has the face of Ukraine.”

The children talked about their love of sports (passed down from their footballer father) and music. The eldest daughter sang a Ukrainian folk song, accompanying herself on a bandura.

The conversation also focused on everyday life in Poland, the ongoing assistance to war-torn Ukraine and nostalgia for home.

Agata Kornhauser-Duda encouraged the Karakevic children to learn the Polish language, noting that its command “may become a great asset for the future.”

The first lady also described her humanitarian visit to the western Ukrainian city of Kamianets-Podilskyi, officials told reporters.

“Everyone must remember that Ukraine isn’t only fighting for its own freedom, but also for the future of the whole free world,” Agata Kornhauser-Duda told her guests.
