Meanwhile, officers stopped more than 1,600 drunk drivers during this year's August long weekend, Mariusz Kurczyk from the National Police Headquarters (KGP) said on Tuesday.

Monday, August 15, was a public holiday in Poland, marking the Catholic Feast of the Assumption and Armed Forces Day.

At the start of this year, stricter traffic rules and tougher fines for drivers took effect in Poland as part of efforts to improve road safety.

Under the new rules, the maximum fine for traffic offenses went up from PLN 5,000 (EUR 1,065, USD 1,080) to PLN 30,000 (EUR 6,400, USD 6,480).

Drivers breaking the speed limit by more than 30 kph now face a fine of no less than PLN 800.
