According to reports, the knifeman killed his ex-girlfriend, and the motive may have been a disappointment in love. The man entered her room through a window.

The 16-year-old girl died on the spot and five other people were hospitalized as a result of the attack, which took place in the village of Tomisławice, near the central city of Łódź, state news agency PAP reported.

Police spokeswoman Aneta Sobieraj said the tragic events at the orphanage occurred at around 11 p.m. on Tuesday.

"Unfortunately, as a result of the incident, a 16-year-old girl, a ward of the orphanage, died on the spot, and five people were hospitalized," she said. "Four of the injured were treated on the spot."

The attacker turned out to be a 19-year-old local man with no previous criminal record. He was detained at his home about an hour after the attack.
